If you are looking ways to get into the spirit of Christmas this holiday season, plan to join in the family-oriented fun in Ashland at two special events this December. On Friday, December 7, Ashland’s popular annual “Christmas Night in Ashland” celebration will be held from 5pm until 8pm, featuring craft-making, a scavenger hunt, a cookie walk, refreshments, displays, caroling, visits with Santa, and the lighting of the town Christmas tree in Memorial Park.
That Jolly Old Elf, Santa, sure manages to get around during the holiday season, and he will be on hand at the Ashland Town Library from 5–6:45pm to visit with children and listen to their Christmas wishes. You can have photos taken of your child with Santa for only $1.00.
Most of the evening’s activities will run from 5until 6:45pm. If you enjoy making crafts, you can create Christmas ornaments at the local branch of the Meredith Village Savings Bank (at no cost) on Main Street, or you can learn to make pinecone bird feeders at the Ashland Baptist Church, also located on Main Street. The church will be the headquarters for the scavenger hunt game, with prizes awarded to the top finishers. Additionally, the Ashland Area Recreation Association will be selling refreshments and providing free hot chocolate and coffee at the church.
One of the most popular activities every year is the cookie walk, held at the Ashland Community Center on Highland Street, where you can pick out your favorite cookies packed in large tins for $3.00 per tin.
The Community Center is also the headquarters for the gift bag raffles held later in the evening; for each non-perishable food item that you bring to donate to the Food Pantry, you receive a raffle ticket, which will then be entered into a drawing for gifts and prizes donated by area merchants and community groups. Non-perishable food items can be brought to the Community Center in exchange for tickets both on Thursday, December 6 from noon until 6pm, and on Friday, December 7, from noon until 7pm. The drawing for gift bags will be held at Memorial Park at 8pm.
If all of these activities make you hungry, a corn chowder supper will be available at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, located on Highland Street next door to the Community Center.
At 7pm, the Hampstead Players will present “A Christmas Carol” at the Ashland Baptist Church, free of charge. At 8pm, everyone is invited to Memorial Park for the town tree lighting ceremony with Santa, followed by caroling and the raffle.
Christmas Night in Ashland has been a popular community event in Ashland for the past several years. Organized by the Community Council of Ashland, the goal of the celebration is to provide a fun-filled evening for families and members of the community while generating much-needed donations for the Food Pantry. Another special holiday event in Ashland is the annual Breakfast with Santa, sponsored and organized by the Ashland Women’s Club. The breakfast will be held on Saturday, December 15th from 8:30–10:30am at the Common Man restaurant. There is a nominal cost for the buffet breakfast, which is generously provided by the Common Man, and during the breakfast, kids will have the opportunity to visit and have their picture taken with Santa for $1.00 extra.
Several gift baskets, suitable for different age groups, will also be raffled off during the breakfast. Proceeds from the breakfast will benefit the Ashland Women’s Club Scholarship Fund, while proceeds from the raffle will benefit the Club’s Newborn Book Fund.
